About
"Ever since I can remember, 'puppetry' has played an important role in my life. As a young child I was already using puppetry to communicate messages to my peers and community.
I was fortunate enough to obtain a scholarship from the French Government in 1981 to participate in the first international puppetry course at the Institute of Puppetry in Charleville-Mézières, France. It was there that I became influenced by Jan Dvorak, from the Drak Theatre in the Czech Republic, amongst others, who instilled in me the love of free improvisation. In fact I am most inspired by artists who can improvise on the spot and still create great work.
Nelson Mandela was a calm and inspiring force in my life as an activist, stimulating me to use puppetry for socio-political change. Jim Henson, of course, was a great influence in my life, as my teacher, a man of great integrity and a true visionary in the world of puppetry.
As an adult, I get inspired most by discovering the work of my students and finding new talent in the next generation of puppeteers, who use their art to inspire, stimulate change and communicate important untold stories to the world."
