Puppetry for Television & The Web

This puppetry workshop, lead by Jim Henson trained -puppeteer, Gary Friedman, is suitable for film-makers, professionals, performers, puppeteers, educators and others interested in learning about puppetry for the screen. The course includes design and construction of puppets, manipulation for the camera, developing scenarios for performance, voice characterisation, and directing short performances.
Participants develop, perform, produce and edit their short scenarios for web cast on a dedicated puppetry ‘You Tube’ channel. |
The Course Description
This course examines the art of puppetry in the 20th-21st century and its effectiveness as a medium of communication in our digital age. The history of the puppet on film and television from Burr Tillstrom’s Kukla, Fran and Ollie and Jim Henson’s Muppets to contemporary web productions is examined.

Our new courses begin on 29 May 2013. We have an initial four-week Puppetry for TV - Design & Construction course on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 10pm from 29 May to 19 June. This will be followed by a four-week Puppetry for TV Performance & Directing course, also on Wednesday evenings, from 26 June to 17 July 2013.

- Participants working with professional puppet builders to design and construct their own puppet characters.
- Developing the puppet’s individual personality, voice and movement through improvisation exercises.
- Developing specialised puppetry techniques specific to performing for the camera.
- Interacting puppets with live performers on camera.
- Learning specific cinematographic techniques for capturing and enhancing the performance on screen.
- Editing performance pieces.
- Investigating the difference between techniques specific to television and the web.
